Nasal Reconstruction Surgery

What is Nasal Reconstruction Surgery?

Human nose consists of mainly three layers namely:

(1) inner lining

(2) middle layer which supports the cartilages and bones

(3) skin covering which is found outside. Nasal reconstruction surgery is the reconstruction of nose which poses a great challenge to the surgeon who performs it.

The main reason for a nasal reconstruction is post surgical defects due to skin cancer removal commonly basal cell carcinoma. The reconstructive methods may change in the case of skin grafts as well as transfer of complex free tissues.

When is Nasal Reconstructive Surgery done?

The Nasal Reconstruction Surgery solves the problem of nasal deformities caused due to cancer, trauma or in the case of missing of nasal anatomy. Mostly the surgery is done in a patient who is suffering from nasal injuries due to some fractures or suffering from deformity of nose due to the removal of skin cancer.

The nasal defects can be varied in shape, size, and depth of the nose and also in the case of injury in the anatomic layers which includes the lining, covering and the support of the nose.

Nasal Reconstructive Surgery Procedure

In Nasal Reconstructive surgical procedures, initially the patient will be given general or local anesthesia. The skin on the affected part is lifted in order to fix the damage or reshape it and this helps the surgeon to rearrange and remove the cartilages and bones affected. Later the skin on the nose is stitched back and a nasal splint is being provided on the surface of nose. The nasal splint helps to regain the shape of the nose at the time of healing. The incisions made during the surgery are very carefully hidden on the inner side of the nose.

Healing after Nasal Reconstructive Surgery

• During the initial days after surgery the patient may feel discomfort and it can be cured by oral medications.

• Nasal splint which is used to regain the nose shape can be removed one week after the surgery.

• Complete rest is required soon after the surgery and guidelines will be provided by the surgeon for the normal activities to be done.

• In the gradual process of healing there may be swellings found at the tip portion of the nose for few months and later it will get cured.

• In this treatment the complete healing can take place only after a year or more but you can experience improvements within few weeks after surgery.
