Abdominal Perineal Resection Surgery
What is Abdominal
Perineal Resection Surgery? Abdominal Perineal Resection surgery is usually
done to remove the lower bowel, anus, sigmoid colon and rectum of the
patient. Usually this surgery is required when the patient is not able
to control the bowel motions. Through this
surgery,
the affected part is removed and a new passage route is re-build for the
bowel at the wall of the patients tummy. This passage route permits
the outlet of body waste. This process is normally called as Colostomy.
The waste materials can be collected through the stick on plastic pouch
provided. After that, an opening will be made at the skin of the central lower abdomen wall and the opening will be 15 inches (40 cms) long. Then the lower bowel is made free from its bed. Around the back passage, another cut is done and it is also freed. After that the complete lower bowel is removed. As a next step, a new opening is made at the sides of tummy wall and it is connected to the colostomy, which is created newly. This colostomy leads to a connection of stoma which allows the waste to go out from the body. This stoma is usually about 1 to 1 ½ inches in diameter. The stick on plastic pouch mentioned earlier will collect the wastes from the outlet of this stoma. This pouch must be worn always by the patient since the release of waste product is an unconscious control. Generally a patient who has undergone this surgery can leave hospital by two weeks, but it may extend up to two months depending on the case. Risks
