What is a Kidney Surgery?

When the patient suffers from pain, difficulty in urination, abdominal pain, injury, or any other discomfort pertaining to kidneys, Doctor advises the patient to go for an ultra sound scan and the cause is diagnosed. Depending on the clinical reports, the patient is advised to undergo a kidney surgery.

What are the Different Types of Kidney Surgeries?

There are several types of kidney surgeries for different ailments of the kidney. Most important types of kidney surgeries are kidney removal surgery, kidney transplant surgery, kidney stone surgery and polycystic kidney disease related surgery. These types of kidney surgeries are performed using conventional surgical procedures or minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures depending on the need and condition of the patient.

Kidney Removal Surgery

Kidney Removal Surgery is also known as Nephrectomy. Patients suffering from severe infections, chronic kidney ailments, renal hypertension, serious kidney injury or kidney cancer need to undergo kidney removal surgery. In this type of kidney surgery, the diseased kidney(s) are partially or completely removed.

There are three types of nephrectomy or kidney removal procedures namely partial, simple and radical. In partial nephrectomy, certain portion of one kidney is removed. In simple nephrectomy, one kidney is completely removed, and in radical nephrectomy, kidney along with lymph nodes and the adrenal gland is removed.

Kidney Transplantation Surgery

Kidney Transplantation Surgery is basically done on patients with complete kidney failure. In kidney transplantation surgery, a donor is essential. The donor can be a person related to the patient, or a person unrelated to the patient or a deceased person with no ailment in the kidney.

For kidney transplantation surgery, the donor’s kidney should match with that of the patient. If both kidneys have to be removed in the surgery, then the patient has to survive by undergoing regular dialysis till a kidney transplantation is performed. Kidney transplantation is also a part of the nephrectomy procedures that involves the removal of the kidney.

Kidney Stone Surgery

Mineral deposits in the form of stones are a major kidney problem for which different types of kidney surgeries are performed. Few most popular kidney stone surgeries are:

Lithotripsy: This surgery is a noninvasive technique wherein ultrasound, sound waves or electric shock waves are used to treat the kidney stones through a probe. Kidney stones are broken into tiny pieces and they come out through the normal urinary tract.

Percutaneous Stone Removal: In this type of kidney surgery, large and deep rooted stones are removed by making incisions on the back intravenous before which the patient is administered under local anesthesia.

Ureteroscopy: The Ureteroscopy is a noninvasive procedure wherein an ureteroscope is sent through the bladder into the urethra and the stones are cut into tiny pieces. Recovery time is very short in this surgery.

Polycystic Kidney Disease Related Surgery

This surgery is performed on patients suffering from multiple cysts grown in the kidney. In the initial stages, cysts can be medically treated without surgery. This surgery becomes essential if the cysts are over grown and do not respond to medication.
