What is Septoplasty Surgery – Post Surgery Care

Do you suffer from recurring sinus problem, nose bleeding, headaches, heavy breathing and snoring while sleeping or even a severe condition called the sleep apnea? All these are the symptoms of deviated septum.

The partition between the two nasal cavities should run down the centre of the nose and when it varies and moves away to one side of the cavity, it is called Deviated septum. The surgical procedure to rectify and straighten the nasal cavity is known as the Septoplasty.

This deviation could be congenital, or the result of the growing up process or could be because of an injury where the nose was broken. Only very few people have straight septum but the need for the septoplasty arises only when the breathing problems and snoring problems are not solved without surgery. Usually septoplasty is done along with other procedures like to rectifying sleep apnea, sinusitis or while removing nasal polyps.

The surgery uses local or general anesthesia for the procedure and hardly takes sixty to ninety minutes. Therefore, it is done in the outpatient itself. Endoscope a thin, light instrument is used while diagnosing the problem and during surgery.

An incision made in the nostrils helps to separate the mucosa from the cartilage and bone. The mucosa is put back after straightening the bent cartilage. Many a time this surgery is done along with rhinoplasty, which changes the shape of the nose.

Septoplasty is a safe surgery and any infection is very rare. However, it is always better to consult your physician and learn about the possible risks before deciding for the operation. Some of the risks are bleeding, infection, marring the sense of smell and septum perforation.

The patient may experience little bleeding after the operation but it does not matter. The nose should not be blown and only be wiped. Heavy and strenuous physical exercise is best avoided. One should also avoid smoky environment and the person should not catch cold.

In case the patient catches cold, they should consult a general physician right away and start a course of antibiotics. It takes around five to six for the swelling to subside and to get the full advantage of the surgery. The patient can get back to his/her normal routine in two weeks time.

By following the physician’s advice and with good care the person can get back to normal very soon with proper breathing. In case of excess bleeding or pain, one should consult the doctor immediately. This surgery is a success and many celebrities have opted for it getting their desired results.
