What is Patent Ductus Arteriosus Surgery?Patent Ductus Arteriosus is a kind of heart problem which is caused at the connection between pulmonary artery and aorta of the human heart, this connection is termed as Ductus Arteriosus Patent Ductus Arteriosus usually occurs in babies

during first few weeks’ right after birth. Due to this problem, the oxygen rich blood transfer is blocked. This heart problem is cured by Patent Ductus Arteriosus Surgery.

Similar to general heart surgery, the child is given general anesthesia initially. Then the surgeon opens the chest and makes a small incision between the ribs at the left side. After that the surgeon will reach the ductus arteriosus, detect the problem and then cut, stitch and tie it as part of surgery.

Following the surgery, the child will be taken to the ICU for detecting any post-operative problems. The child has to be admitted in the hospital until the surgeon discharges the child, generally it will be 1-2 days. Also an anticoagulant medication is provided as a therapy for the child to prevent from the clot formation.

• Infection might occur at the incision made areas.

• Allergies might occur due to anesthesia. Stroke, heart attack may also occur.

• Chances of Bacterial Endocarditis are there. Bacterial Endocarditis causes bacterial infection at the heart valves.

• Hoarseness, paralyzed diaphragm may occur.

• Fluid may build up around the lungs.

• There are chances for narrowing of aorta, reopening of the ductus arteriosus and incomplete closure of the ductus arteriosus.
