Inner ear surgery

The ear is normally divided into external ear, middle ear and inner ear. The canal from the external ear is a tube that runs from the outer ear and ends at the ear drum.

The inner ear is made up of multiple channels that are filled with fluids. The inner ear has nerve cells that aid hearing in a person. The nerve cells are also very important to provide balance.

Inner ear surgery is performed to solve a variety of hearing and other problems. Mostly it involves inserting a Tube in the inner ear which is called ear tube surgery, or inserting cochlear implants to improve the hearing.

In case of the ear tube surgery (also called the Tympanostomy tube) the surgery is a pretty simple one and normally takes about 15 minutes. The patient is given general anesthesia. A small hole is made in the eardrum.

This is required to remove the fluid existing in the middle ear. Some times suction is used to remove the same. Once the fluid has been removed a tube (made of soft plastic and looks like bobbins in a sewing machine) is placed in the inner ear.

This will prevent further accumulation of fluid. The ear tube normally falls out of the ear by itself or is removed in cases where it fails to do so.

Cochlear implants are used to provide better hearing for people who are deaf due to specific reasons and also for those who are having difficulty with hearing aids.

Normally cochlear implants will be able to give patients up to 50% of their original hearing. During the Inner ear surgery to place cochlear implants, electrodes are placed into the cochlea.

These help patients to hear by transforming the acoustic waves into electrical impulses. These will stimulate the acoustic nerve and thus replace the function of the normal ear.

In certain cases, Inner ear surgery used to involve large incisions and drilling in order to obtain the required exposure. Recent discoveries are changing the way inner ear surgery is done.

These are giving surgeons options to make punctures instead of holes and using cameras and other sophisticated surgical instruments they can locate the problem area accurately and also place the implants or the required equipment in a more accurate manner than ever before.

During the inner ear surgery, a surgeon should be careful not to damage sensory cells.Improvements in Hearing and also better vertigo control and balance have been registered among patients after the inner ear surgery.

The new methods and inventions in the field of inner ear surgery have helped reduce the surgery time and the recover times dramatically.
