Ear Surgery Procedure

Ear surgeries have been proving to be a boon to people with ear problems. Ears are an important organ in our bodies as they perform the function of hearing.

Further from an aesthetic point of view, ears make a big impact as they a very visible portion of the face. Ear surgery and its associated procedure help people with defects or deformities in their ears, to gain back their confidence and their social life.

Ear surgery procedure mainly depends on the nature of the surgery, which in turn depends on the problem that is being corrected of fixed.

Ear surgeries can correct various kinds of problems which maybe related to outer ear like varying ear sizes, asymmetrical ears, protruding ears etc or can be related to the inner ear like ear drum problems, deafness etc.

The problems also occur due to various reasons like genetic, accidents or abuse of the ears etc., and so the ear surgery procedure will also vary based on the same.

In case of cosmetic corrections, the ear surgery procedure is normally very simple. The patient is given local or general anesthetic as required and a small cut or incision is made at the back of the ear , close to the cartilage.

Then the cartilage is bent or modified to bring it back closer to the head.In case of ear lobe surgery the procedure is even simpler, as local anesthetic will be used in most cases and the surgeon will try to bring the two portions of the lob (that are normally separated due to a cut or tear) together by means of stitches.

In case of cosmetic surgery to fix the ear sizes , shape or angle, even if one ear has the problem the surgery will normally be done on both ears in order to get a better balance and appearance.

In case of ear tube surgery, the procedure involves making a small incision in the ear drum. This will help the fluid present inside to drain.

Then a tube made of soft plastic will be placed in the ear drum in order to avoid further fluid buildup.Inner ear problems are more complicated.

These can be perforations in the ear drum or related to deafness that might require implants. In these cases the ear surgery procedure involves making large incisions.

Drilling might also be involved in order to get the required exposure to place the implants etc. Recent discoveries are providing opportunities where small punctures can be made in place of these large holes.

Care should be taken during the ear surgery, so that ugly scars are not left behind on the patient’s ears after the procedure. Sometimes faint scars on the back of the ear will be present after the surgery and will fade away over time.
