Tailbone Surgery Types: Tackling the Tailbone
A cyst on
the tailbone near the cleft of the buttocks is called the Pilonidal cyst
or the tailbone cyst. This cyst is widespread in men than women and is
found in age between 15 to 24.
This is a harmless cyst but when infected creates problems with pain and
swelling. Sometimes the pus formed gives a foul smell with discharge.
The person finds it difficult to sit and walk. At times, the person has
fever and chill caused by this pilonidal cyst.
The main causes for this tailbone cyst are poor hygiene conditions, obesity,
deskbound or inactive jobs, excessive sweating, sitting for a long period
for time, excessive hair growth, use of tight clothes, or riding bike
for a long time.
The signs and symptoms of this tailbone cyst are many. They are pain and
swelling in the lower spine, redness in the skin, skin remains warm, there
is an opening and pus drains from it.
Many home remedies can cure this tailbone cyst.
However, when there is more than one cyst it needs medical intervention
and the doctor resorts to surgery. The first treatment for this tailbone
cyst is to make an incision in the tailbone and to drain out the fluid
and hair in that area. After that the surgeon packs the cavity with gauze.
The process is done with local anesthesia and the person needs to change
the dressing regularly up to three weeks.
Another procedure to get rid of this tailbone cyst is excision. The doctor
removes the cyst along with the nearby tissues and rules out the problem
of its reoccurrence. The latest type of excision method of removal of
the cyst is by just touching is lightly and removing it without disturbing
the deep tissues. This is lighter method when compared to the entire excision
procedure.
When the cyst needs a lengthy surgical procedure, a colon and rectal surgeon
does the entire procedure with the help of anesthesia. A regular outpatient
care after the surgery ensures good healing and averts the reoccurrence
of the problem.
The risks and complications of these tailbone cysts are that they may
reoccur, formation of abscess, infections that can sometimes spread throughout
the body and very rarely formation of skin cancer.
The best ways to keep away from these cysts are to maintain good hygiene,
wear loose clothes, keep the area free of hair and avoid too much sitting
and pressure on the tailbone and to keep the areas clean and dry. Obese
people should reduce weight to avoid the likelihood of the problem.
These cysts are the most problematic for the ones who have them. It not
only induces pain but also gives an awkward sight. The persons with the
problem are the best judge to decide the type of treatment and surgery
they wish to undergo as it will ease them of the pain and discomfort caused
by this cyst.
